Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka @gladyskalemazikusoka, Uganda, is a wildlife veterinarian who responded to the tragic decline of the world’s mountain gorilla population by pioneering a strategy that linked their well-being to the health and welfare of the human communities living in close proximity to animal habitats. The “One Health” approach has contributed to the recovery of the number of gorillas in Uganda, to significant improvements in the lives of communities around the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, and to its adoption in other parts of Africa and beyond.
